Memes have slowly been revolutionizing the culture of the internet. We see them on all social networks around the world. But we have never asked ourselves the origin of memes.
First let’s define what a meme is (in case some do not know).
A meme is a tool that can describe an idea, expression, concept, situation or thought, which spreads through the internet. It is broadcasted mostly through social networks. Memes have been revolutionizing so much that they are considered as mechanisms of advertising strategies by some companies.
Why is it called meme?
The word “meme” has a scientific origin. It is said that this word came from the book “The Selfish Gene”,by scientist Richard Dawkins in 1976.
According to Dawkins, a meme is a replicable cultural unit in which is replicated by other people but with diverse variations and reinterpretations.
What was the first meme?
The first meme was a gif of a baby dancing which name is “Ooga Chaka Baby”. It appeared in the years 2000 y 2002.
New memes are coming out in the social networks in a matter of seconds and are constantly modified.
We no longer use many memes that were popular a few years ago and we are increasingly seeing the emergence of new memes that take popularity in a short time.
